As part of the second phase of the Nature Returns project, a three-day Academy was held from 14 to 16 May 2025 in the stunning setting of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, bringing together dedicated entrepreneurs ready to develop sustainable business ideas that support the protection and management of this remarkable floodplain ecosystem. Organised in partnership with Connectology and supported by local and national experts, the Nature Returns Lonjsko Polje Academy for Entrepreneurs offered participants practical knowledge in entrepreneurship, legal and financial frameworks, and pitch development — all tailored to the context of working in and around protected areas.
During the Academy, five promising business ideas were presented — each designed to generate income while contributing to the conservation goals of Lonjsko Polje:
- Using drones and lawnmowers to manage invasive plant species;
- Enriching the visitor experience through a smart interactive screen with gamified content;
- Breeding traditional Posavina geese, helping preserve local genetic heritage;
- Developing retreat-based tourism experiences tied to the natural and cultural values of the park;
- Establishing a “HoneyBee Park”, an educational space promoting awareness of bees and pollinators.
Participants benefited from expert guidance provided by professionals from the Ministry of Agriculture, CroStartup, Agrivi, and others. The programme included sessions on setting up an agricultural company, startup law, financial planning, funding opportunities, and dedicated time for networking and collaboration.
Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, one of Europe’s largest preserved floodplains, provided a fitting backdrop for the Academy. Its mosaic of wetlands, traditional pastures, and rich birdlife highlights the urgent need — and opportunity — to build nature-based businesses that can support conservation efforts and strengthen local economies.
With continued support, we look forward to seeing these ideas take flight — helping Lonjsko Polje remain a living example of how people and nature can thrive together.
